Essay for Shabbat Chazon and Tisha B’av 2014

We want to thank our dear friends who are continuing to pray for our soldiers and for the welfare of Israel. Here on Itamar it is very hard for all of us – many of our young men are on the front line in Gaza right now. Those who are privileged to enjoy a quiet Shabbat mustn’t forget our boys in the battle field who are out there fighting for the future of our people. This Shabbat is called “Chazon” – we read the first chapter of Isaiah where he talks about the spiritual decline in Israeli society. This he prophesized around 250 years before the destruction of the first temple. He saw what would cause the downfall of our people and warned us to repent. Unfortunately, Israel did not heed his words and we suffered the destruction of two temples. Today after thousands of years of exile we are blessed to have returned to our land and witness the building of a beautiful country. The consoling words of our prophets have come true. Tisha B’av has taken on a different mood and meaning. Our focus of mourning on this solemn day must be on giving Israel the strength to overcome its enemies and allow us to move forward in building our third temple. It is no longer a dream but a reality that is getting closer and closer to fruition. I read a story this week in a Yiddish newsletter that bothered me. It spoke about the holy Rebbe of Berdychiv Z”TL that when he would make a wedding he would write on the invitation that the wedding is scheduled to take place in Jerusalem and if for some reason the Beit Hamikdash is not yet built then it will take place in Berdychiv. This, of course, is a very special story when you go back to the 19th century when he lived. In those days it wasn’t easy to move to Israel and Jerusalem wasn’t liberated yet. So it, indeed, reflected the great Rebbe’s love and desire to return to the land.  Unfortunately something went wrong with the way the Chasidim were educated upon arriving in the United States- they don’t see Jerusalem of today as part of the redemption process. Instead they choose to continue to remain in exile and duplicate the shtetl lifestyle of Eastern Europe in America. This is a great tragedy and is worth mourning about on Tisha B’av itself. While Am Yisrael is being collected from all the four corners of the earth HOME, her boys fight for her very existence in complete self-sacrifice, it is hard to fathom Jewish people not giving thought to what is happening in Israel today as it demands self-sacrifice from all of us as a nation!

The redemption process is a slow moving process that our sages describe as “kimah Kimah” one step at a time. Let us pray that the Jews of the world wake up and snap out of their stupor as events spiral forward at a yet faster rate as the minutes fly by. It is top priority for everyone to be a part of the mission of returning home and protecting the Land in whatever way through whatever means he or she can!

There is a little blue glass bowl I have, a permanent fixture on our kitchen table, always full of sweet candy. After noticing that it is always full, no-one ever asks if it was someone’s birthday or anniversary. It’s just a fact in our home, that there is always something sweet here.

It is not easy to be the mother personally of two boys, soldiers in fighting units, engaged in the war of good over evil this summer. It falls into a solemn time when the fun of the sun is shadowed by our grief for when Rome came against Israel, destroying our Temple, setting our land on fire, scattering us and saying our hope is lost. This is why we have a custom of dipping our bread into salt. To remember.

As a mother living in Israel in this generation, I can say I have the merit of immersing myself in the mikveh of blind faith. I don’t know where the boys exactly are. What they eat, if they sleep, if they can drink when the hot reeking dust of the enemy blows into their faces. I wonder what dangers they encounter and if they internalize what they see. I immerse myself now in steadfast prayer, spontaneously, like never before. Please let them come home safely. Our boys are part of an army whose comradery supersedes any other because “Love your neighbor as yourself” has been so ingrained despite the hundreds of generations since Rabbi Akiva said it. It is a way of life. How they enter the fight in complete will, from the deepest place in their hearts and souls to serve Hashem, the nation and all goodness in the world.

This Shabbat I am baking challah with honey.

This is for the hope restored and ignited that no army or force can ever extinguish. This is for the dreams of all the Jewish generations coming true, for prayers answered. This is not a time for despair. As the missiles fall on Israel, planeloads of her people come to return to her, even now. And here, on the mountain, where I can just make out the sea I wait, knowing prophecy does come true. “Veshavu Banim legvoolam”.  – Your children will return to their land” Jeremiah 31:17

Shabbat Shalom, Leah Goldsmith

Leah’s Blog – Reflections on the disengagement

My Blog- The hot Summer of 2014

It is almost a decade ago that our family took an unforgettable bus ride into what was soon to be the demolished Gush Katif. It was a last opportunity to ride as a civilian into that area of Israel, a collage of splendid greenhouses of celery, lettuce and I remember tasting the sweet tomatoes that were too good to be true. There were songbirds, cows, roosters and the steady slushy sound of the waves filling out the quiet, the peace. The beautiful villas that decorated that flourishing oasis facing the blue Mediterranean Sea made me wonder why we hadn’t spent more time in the salty sandy dunes of Gaza in all the years we had lived in Israel.

That tranquility ended abruptly as only a week after our visit, the residents of that paradise that they made in the sand piles were dragged from their homes by our army. Killing factories, bases for Chamas and missiles replace the synagoges and on top of the broken debris of hothouses, training camps for terrorists have been set up. When we passed Ashkelon on that day in the hot glaring blaze before the disengagement I remember seeing signs of doves and slogans for peace, banners rippling in the hot dusty wind of summer. People said, “If we only give it to them- we can have peace!” Something that reminded me of throwing Yosef into the pit, for after that was done the torah tells us the brothers sat down to eat bread.

Today houses in Tel Aviv have sandbags on their windows. There is no eating bread in peace, as the missiles launched from the surf in Gush Katif destroy those Tel Aviv dreams.

This summer has had us praying more. We believe our prayers were offerings that were accepted and are accepted now. As this Shabbat comes in and enters our hearts we thank Hashem for the open miracles He in His goodness has shown us here in Israel as hundreds of deadly rockets have fallen all over. In His mercy we have seen little damage. We also ask to pray for the refuah shelayma of our dear soldier of Itamar, Mordechay Chay Ben Bracha Yehudit who was wounded yesterday. We ask him to protect our soldiers going in to operate and that they all return safely (our two sons included!)We ask Hashem to give clarity of decision to our leaders to preserve the entire Israel at this time of great blessing as the rocks give wine and the prophesy of our Land coming to life returns. We as an entire country have experienced the result of folly, of the mistake of ripping away a limb from the body of Israel in leaving Gaza and pray that all of Israel remains forever in our hands. Hashem promised it to us, an everlasting legacy. To all of our friends out there, a friend brings a friend- please spread the word about our mission here and we need you now more than ever.

Shabbat Shalom, a Shabbat of Shalom in the true sense of the word

Itamar News Updates June 14th 2013

Guess what? We have great news! The city plan of Itamar is now in its final stages before being officially approved.  This will allow us to build freely and legally while we continue to grow and prosper in our Promised Land. Of course G-D has already approved of our city plan many times over – for example look in Isaiah 54:2 “Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your dwelling places be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.”IMG_5857

This week a special event was held on Itamar to give tribute to all the wonderful volunteers of the community. There is a large variety of areas where residents are constantly lending a helping hand in making Itamar the special place it is. Some of these areas include education, security, culture, agriculture, and building. The event was attended by the head of the region counsel of Shomron Gershon Masikah and many other friends of the community.Gershon addresses

This week a memorial service was held for the massacre that took place in our Chitzim Yeshivah High School in 2002. Three of our high school boys were murdered then when a terrorist from a nearby village entered the Chitzim High School grounds and opened fire on the basketball court and in the dorms.

Another memorial service will be held this week on remembering the Shabo massacre that took place also back in 2002 where a mother and three children were killed as well as the head of our response team, Yosef Twito, HY”D..

Right now we are in a fundraising drive for Itamar. We are asking our donors to respond kindly to our request for assistance at this time, especially for our children’s Summer Camp program. Without your support we would not have been able to reach all of the goals and projects planned and completed- thanx to you! Shabbat Shalom from Itamar Israel! See our project list.

Itamar News Updates April 19th 2013

IMG_5166Memorial Day on Itamar when we remember our dear residents that were taken away from us before their time. It is in the merit of these great souls that we continue to grow and thrive in our homeland. The community held two memorial services. The first one took place in our new, still unfinished, synagogue with a very moving ceremony. A movie was shown to the community called “Rachel is crying over her children” where the mothers of those that lost their lives on Itamar shared memories of their beloved children. Another memorial service was held at the Itamar cemetery in the morning lead by the students of Itamar’s high school Chitzim. Students studied the lives of the fallen and gave their testimonies. Itamar celebrated Independence Day which is also the birthday of our community as we were founded in 1984 on Israel Independence Day. The celebration was marked by our annual community dinner which takes place outside in our basketball court. The Itamar children preformed skits and other entertaining events like juggling etc. A beautiful display of fireworks was show as well to end the event. Special thanks to all our dear friends of Itamar for helping finance the event.

A group of Holland tourists visited Itamar this week and met with our dear residents Shimon and Sarah Barda. Shimon and Sarah have set up a perfume factory on Itamar back in 1993 and are trying to expand their sales abroad. Shimon addressed the group and explained how all his products are organic and natural made from plants grown in Israel. A special welcome to our dear friends Henk Poot and his daughter Shifrah IMG_5169who have been helping the High School here for years and participated in the tour as well.

The cucumber season begins again on Itamar! This week despite the cold weather the first cucumbers IMG_5183were picked in the Eidan hothouses. May it be a very fruitful season for our Itamar farmers.

Itamar News Updates April 12 2013

Itamar welcomed the visit of Yehivat Lev Hatarohtree planting 2 from Ramat Beit Shemesh this week.  They planted trees and heard an inspiring message from Rabbi Avi Ronski former chief Rabbi of the Israeli army and head of Mishkan Ehud group mishkanYeshiva here on Itamar.

We welcomed Aaron and Hodayah HuhemAaron Hodayahwho came to visit the community. They had a fantastic time and enjoyed the beautiful panoramic view from one of Itamar’s look out points called Mitzpeh Matan. This site is named after Itamar’s first officer of the young generation that was killed when he jumped on a suicide bomber saving the lives of many civilians in the city of Ariel.

Thank G-d finally work on the Itamar water line for our hilltops is underway. For many years, we were losing tremendous amounts of water because of weak and exposed pipelines not to mention our hilltop neighborhoods that were suffering because of constant water shortages. It is certainly a challenge to pump water UP to farms while water naturally flows DOWN!

Mazal tov to Aviad and Shoshanah Bahrav chanukat bayiton the completion of their new home. They held the Mezuzah fixing ceremony this week, a big party it was! We bless them with only happiness and success with enjoyment in their new home.Chanukat bayit 2

Special thanks to Jessica Katz of Yad Leah from Passaic NJ and all those involved with her in this important mission for her amazing care and generosity for sending clothing for Itamar and its hilltop neighborhoods. This chesed drive has been going on for many years and we know that if begins with the donor of the clothing, the volunteers that go and collect, sort and send- all of this entailing lots of hard work. May Hashem give Jessica and all involved much shefa and nacahat from this awesome endeavor!

Next week Itamar celebrates its 29th birthday on Israel’s Independence day. We bless our community that may it continue to flourish and prosper in the heartland of Israel. We invite you all come and celebrate the fruition of prophecy in the land becoming redeemed and blessed- We take this opportunity to thank you for being a friend of Itamar!
